Partnering with third-party developers to meet the needs of warfighters
"The digital, modular architecture of iRobot PackBot enabled rapid and easy integration of the Fido payload, ensuring that iRobot can quickly meet the needs of the customer. The Fido payload is highly sensitive and, combined with PackBot, makes a formidable and mobile explosive detection robot that removes the human operator from harm’s way."

The iRobot PackBot with FLIR Fido Explosives Detection Kit
reaches through car windows
and under vehicles to detect explosive vapors emanating from Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). This advanced security solution, just one example of a successful third-party development partnership, has resulted in the first major deployment of explosives-detection robots by the U.S. military.

The Need

To place an explosives detection sensor close to suspicious
packages and other objects, while keeping warfighters at safe
standoff distances.

The Solution

iRobot teamed with FLIR to integrate its award-winning, explosive-detection technology onto the combat-proven iRobot® PackBot® platform. The iRobot® PackBot® with FLIR Fido® Explosives Detection Kit, an advanced security solution that detects explosive vapors, is just one example of a successful third-party development partnership.

The robot detects explosive vapors emanating from Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). PackBot’s dexterous, seven-foot arm allows the robot to place the explosive sensor close to suspicious packages and other objects, as well as reach through car windows and under vehicles. When explosives are detected, PackBot destroys the IED, while troops remain out of harm’s way.

The partnership between iRobot and FLIR has resulted in the first major deployment of explosives-detection robots; more than 100 have been ordered for use by the U.S. military.

Fido is a registered trademark of FLIR.
